Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Chinese Track.

Getting started

Where do I start?

Start at Level 1, Lesson 1—even if you know some basics. It's fast and sets up habits and cues you'll rely on later. Each lesson builds on the previous one, so starting from the beginning ensures you don't miss important foundations.

Do I need to know Chinese characters?

No! You can learn entirely with pinyin. Chinese Track lets you switch between Pinyin, Simplified, and Traditional characters at any time. Start with pinyin to focus on pronunciation and meaning, then add characters when you're ready.

How long does one lesson take?

About 10–20 minutes depending on how many activities you do. You can split it: do Listen and Vocabulary now (8–10 min), then Activities later when you have time. There's no rush—learn at your own pace.

Can I use this on mobile?

Absolutely! Chinese Track is fully responsive. Everything works on phones and tablets. Audio + minimal taps keep you moving. You can even listen hands-free with the screen off.

Study flow

What's the best way to study each lesson?

Follow this flow: 1) Listen to the dialogue 2–3 times, 2) Review vocabulary (tap words for audio), 3) Do 2–3 activities to practice, 4) Read Notes & Hints for grammar tips, 5) Check Comments if you have questions. You don't need to master everything in one session—spaced practice works better.

How often should I study?

Daily practice is ideal, even if it's just 10–15 minutes. Beginners: one lesson every 2–3 days. Committed learners: one lesson per day or two lessons every other day. Consistency beats intensity—small daily reps build lasting skills.

Can I skip ahead or go back?

Yes! You can jump to any lesson you want. But we recommend going in order since lessons build on previous vocabulary and grammar. If a lesson feels too easy, you can speed through it. If it's hard, take your time and review.

What if I forget vocabulary from previous lessons?

That's normal! Use the Review activity—it automatically includes words you've seen before. You can also use the Word Bank to search and review any vocabulary. The flashcards feature lets you practice specific lessons or all lessons.

Features

Do I get pronunciation feedback?

Yes! The Tone Trainer activity lets you record your pronunciation and get instant feedback. It scores your tones and shows where to improve. This feature is available in select lessons and is being expanded.

What activities are available?

We have 6 main activity types: Tone Trainer (pronunciation), Typing Test (pinyin speed), Character Practice (stroke order), Sentence Builder (word order), Listening Drills (tone discrimination), and Review (spaced repetition). Each lesson has 3–5 activities.

Can I track my progress?

Yes! Your progress is saved automatically. You can see which lessons you've completed, your best scores for activities, streaks, and badges. Progress syncs across web and mobile (when available).

Are there podcasts or audio downloads?

Yes! Visit the Podcast Feeds page to subscribe to lesson audio in your podcast app. You can also use the Bulk Download feature to get audio files for offline study.

What's the Word Bank?

The Word Bank is your personal vocabulary collection. It shows all words you've encountered, with search and filter options. You can export it as CSV for use with apps like Pleco or Anki.

Troubleshooting

Audio won't play

Check your browser's autoplay settings. Some browsers block audio until you interact with the page. Try clicking the play button again. If it still doesn't work, check your browser's console for errors and try a different browser.

My progress disappeared

Progress is saved in your browser's local storage. If you cleared browser data or switched browsers, you may need to sign in again. Make sure you're using the same account. If the issue persists, contact support with your account email.

The page is slow or not loading

Try refreshing the page. If it's still slow, check your internet connection. Chinese Track works best with a stable connection. You can also try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser.

I can't see Chinese characters

Make sure your browser supports Chinese fonts. Most modern browsers do automatically. If characters show as boxes, try installing Chinese fonts on your device or using a different browser. The Pinyin mode is always available as a fallback.

Activities aren't saving my scores

Make sure you're signed in. Scores are saved to your account. If you're in a private/incognito window, try a regular window. Check that your browser allows local storage. If issues persist, contact support.
